This chapter describes a pilot Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) scheme that supports communal actions to invest in initiatives that enhance elephant habitat, reduce incursion into village lands, that will help reduce HEC. The study area is the KhaoAng Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary (KARN) in the Eastern Region of Thailand. Only 37% of the sanctuary provides viable elephant habitat, leading to a shortage of food and water in the sanctuary for the wild elephant population that is growing at 9.8% per annum5. As a result, wild elephants often come out of the sanctuary to raid nearby cropland. While government agencies have made investments to revive the degraded ecosystem, the actions taken to date have not been able to stem the HEC.
