FTA @ COP25

2-13 December 2019

Madrid, Spain

About
the event

The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 (2 – 13 December 2019) will take place under the Presidency of the Government of Chile and will be held with logistical support from the Government of Spain. SBSTA 51/ SBI 51 will take place 2-9 December 2019.

Facing the consequences of rising temperatures such as fires and flooding, it is time to turn commitment into action. FTA bring the latest scientific research, insights and experiences to events at the 25th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 25).

Nature-based solutions to help address the climate crisis are gaining traction. At UNFCCC COP25 in Madrid, FTA scientists will present evidence that highlights how forest conservation, agroforestry, sustainable peatland management, and control of wildfires can support both climate and development goals. The importance of social justice and gender-equitable approaches to climate action will also be showcased.

Wildfires and NDC implementation: results from an e-discussion of the Thematic Working Group on agriculture, food security and land use

Monitoring NDC implementation and tracking its progress is essential to achieve countries’ commitments under the Paris Agreement, both with regards to adaptation and mitigation. There are various challenges related to monitoring the outcomes of mitigation and adaptation actions in the AFOLU sector.

The Thematic Working Group (TWG) was established in 2017 under the umbrella of the NDC Partnership as a peer-to-peer network for countries and international organizations to exchange and consult on knowledge, experiences and needs related to climate change impacts and challenges in the agricultural sectors. Since around one-fourth of countries (42/163) report wildfires as a climate-related hazard in their NDC or NC, it was identified as a topic of interest during the second annual meeting of the TWG.

Wild fires are expected in many countries as a consequence of climate change. Wild fires are also a major source of GHG emissions and can compromise the efforts to mitigate climate change through improve forest management and afforestation.

Social and environmental justice as a trigger of robust ambitious climate action and prosperous future for all

Climate change profoundly affects ecosystems, societies, and people all over the world, especially the most vulnerable. To cope with it relevant simultaneous transformations in diverse fronts are needed and by doing so it is fundamental to ensure it is done in a fair and equitable way. The side event will touch upon on consideration for a just transition from the lens of urban and rural dwellers. FAO and FTA will present a methodology to assess the vulnerability of forests and forest-dependent people, and Climate Strategies will introduce thoughts on impacts of decarbonization on workers in high carbon activities like fossil fuel extraction. A panel including representatives from different constituencies will then explore how social and environmental justice can ground fair ambition in the NDCs.

Science and territories: what synergies to protect against the effects of climate change?

As science continues to acquire new knowledge about climate change and its impacts, establishing alarming findings and scenarios, its consideration by decision-makers and local actors remains weak in light of the issues at stake. This series of side-events proposes a collective reflection aimed at reinforcing the impact of Science on decision makers at the territorial level, around the following questions:

  • How to promote the dialogue between scientists and territorial actors to better understand the complexity of the issues related to climate change
  • What steps should be taken to co-build solutions adapted to local contexts?
  • What devices to deploy to support decision?

These events will draw on examples of adaptation solutions, decision support tools and national strategies deployed in West Africa, South America, the Mediterranean and France, and co-constructed with research from South and North. The researchers’ words will be shared with those of the actors and decision makers from these territories to feed this debate.
